It is noticeable that only recently groups of organizations are pushing governments to consider Green Living or "environment-conscious living" so to speak.
Solar and wind energy came into consideration.Harnessing solar energy is very costly at this time. First and foremost solar cell which is derived from silicon wafer are very expensive to manufacture. Another thing is solar cell also wears out in time due to tremendous and regular heat exposure from the sun rays. Solar cell only make use of sunlight, not the heat of the sun. If there is no sunlight, one cannot make use of his solar power system.
It is true that solar power system is an alternative way from being connected to the electric grid of an electric- generating company, but the cost of installing such a system is not practical at this moment in time, not unless semiconductor companies would be able to find ways to make the price of each solar cell very affordable to common people. Currently, it could cost to several hundred thousand pesos just to power up basic home appliances.
Having installed the whole kit in one's home is not a guarantee of a maintenance-free system. There, one should take a look at his back-up batteries whether some needs replacement, for we know that rechargeable batteries also wears out after their life span. Also, the solar array should be free from falling debris or tree trunks or whatever because cells are thin materials which are very fragile. During typhoon or tornado, solar arrays should be well-protected, 'better to disassemble and keep inside the house temporarily. One thing more, it would require a vast space that could even occupy an entire roof of a house just to power up a typical home.
Way back when I was still abroad, I and the 2 office friends of mine came up with the idea about doing business in the Philippines with solar power. One is an electrical engineer who was confident that he could do the fabrication or setup, the other was an accountant whom we insisted to provide the finances and I would be the one to layout and gather the electronic parts to make a complete circuit. At first we were all excited but after exerting enough effort to look for suppliers with the lowest price, our interest gradually fades knowing the high price of each solar cell.
Solar power system is indeed beneficial but only those who can afford the price at this time.
